Paradise
Hell, I won’t lie to you. I kind of got used to the nightly routine after a few weeks. With all the work these ladies came up with, there wasn’t much time for self-loathing during the duty day.
I did become friends, or friendly enough at least, with many of the girls. You never could get too chummy, there was always some suspicious or jealous eye, but things began to feel less like prison. A little more like a vacation. Between the nightly “assignments” and tinkering around the motor pool, my whole world perspective shrank. Fuck all that zombie crap. I even missed my old campmates less and less every day. They were only apocalypse buddies after all. We’d never met each other before the end of civilization.
When your world is so tiny, you get pretty sensitive to the most minor changes to routine. A real life sixth sense. Like when we have less work to do than normal. A big red flag.
I was sitting in the motor pool, trying to appear busy while Rachel bent over a hybrid’s power plant. Everyone else was hard at work and not looking our way. “Hey Rach, don’t you think it’s strange these vehicles are in such good shape? Not a single bullet hole.” Keeping my tone casual as could be, no one saw where my hands rested. Rachel let herself push back against my touch, but kept her usual dour face on.
“So what? Things have calmed down out there ever since Daniella setup her outpost. Do you of all people miss the work? Your lazy ass couldn’t…” Some cussing by the supply shed showed the rouse wasn’t necessary. A couple of girls slapped the hell out of each other over some damn thing, while the rest either tried to break it up or cheered along. I didn’t hesitate and just yanked Rachel below the hood. Nor did she resist. She wrapped her arms as tightly around me as her mouth locked on mine.
Was it love at first sight? No. Was it love at all and just two desperate people needing someone to care about them? Ah, hell, I don’t know. Maybe it was just the exoticism of forbidden pleasure that attracted us both. Who cares? For thirty beautiful seconds we found a little peace in each other’s arms. Once upon a time that was a routine thing. Not life and death serious.
Boot steps coming around the car broke us apart. I popped up, flashlight in hand, with a nonchalance born from weeks of practice. Rachel scooted under the car pretending to do something. The ‘little boss’ came around the corner. I leaned forward to hide my partial erection and seized the conversational initiative. Wish I kept my mouth shut.
“What was that all about, Jessy?”
She grinned and threw an arm around me. “That, my little partner, was the first bidding war over your scrawny butt. And let’s face it, the good stuff in hand holds more weight than a ration card.” Jessy shoved a bottle in my pocket and winked.
